Three joints for the price of one in the new Henry Hall building in Hudson Yards. The main attraction is Legacy Records itself, the latest restaurant from the team behind downtown restaurants Charlie Bird and Pasquale Jones. It’s an easy, upscale Italian that’s open for dinner and weekend brunch – and though the prices look punchy, they include service. Within the same building, you’ll also find Easy Victor Café (for breakfast and lunch bites) and Ada’s Place, a cocktail / wine bar.
Like Legacy Records, 44 & X is a restaurant to go to when dinner (and your companions) are the focus of the night. The seasonal menu features “reinvented American classics” – so expect the likes of Maine lobster & Maryland crab ravioli, Turkey & wild mushroom meatloaf, and Peanut butter mousse tart. Service is friendly but not fussy, and the weekend brunch attracts a hip, young crowd.
Food halls are quite the thing in New York these days, and Gotham West is one of the best places for cheap eats in New York. Think street food, but undercover and with more comfort, and you get the picture. Gotham West Market is home to Corner Slice, one of the best pizza joints in Manhattan, as well as to the brilliant Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop. Save room for a scoop or two of ice cream from Ample Hills Creamery!
There’s many a local who’ll tell you this is the place for the best burgers in New York and carnivores can’t go wrong with the original 5 Napkin Burger: 10oz of 100% Angus chuck, topped with gruyere cheese, caramelised onions with rosemary aioli – served on a plate, because “burgers this great deserve to be stacked high on a real plate, at a table with a proper setting.” Veggie and vegan burgers are made with the same care and generosity. This restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen gets busy – reservations recommended.
A restaurant in praise of the pig – specifically, small-producer, high-end American bacon, the signature being their Kentucky Fried variety. Beer & bacon flights, bacon guacamole, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, and even bacon Walldorf salad – tuck in, and throw caution and calories to the wind! Reservations recommended.
Expect to queue (or leave your name on a waiting list) at this dim sum restaurant that’s an outpost of the famous original in Hong Kong – “the world’s most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant” since 2010. Super busy and unpretentious, the restaurant offers inexpensive dim sum, all cooked to order. Be sure to try the BBQ pork buns, which are baked rather than steamed, with a crisp, pastry crust.
You’d never guess it from the outside, but the interior of this diner is classic Americana – plus it's open 24 hours a day, every day of the year; and it’s just a 15-minute walk from YOTEL New York. Expect comfort food at affordable prices – your foodie friends are unlikely to swoon; and you’re more likely to Instagram the interior than the food. But there’s a lot to love, especially when you’re hungry!
This happy marriage of coffee and donuts is housed inside the Westside Highway Carwash and sells “the absolute best donuts in New York,” according to New York Magazine. Plus, where else can you watch cars being cleaned as you get your caffeine / carbs fix? While not exactly a restaurant, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t go, we promise you. In a similar vein (but with tables, should you choose to eat in) try Schmackary’s, a Hell’s Kitchen bakery that’s heaven for cookie monsters.
A New York institution since 1965, this busy “tavern” serves comfort food and cocktails without charging an arm and leg. Great if you are taking in a Broadway Show, but be sure to book (reservations open seven days in advance). If you’re lucky, you might even snag a post-show table at Bar Centrale, a tiny speakeasy tucked above the restaurant (it’s so discreet there’s not even a sign).
Korean “tapas” in this tiny (36-seater) restaurant, a 15-minute walk from YOTEL, where the menu is divided into small, medium, and large plates, all intended for sharing. The food is excellent and modestly priced, and uses sustainably produced ingredients, from local suppliers where possible. If you feel like splashing out, the tasting menu is a treat.
